Monday Portuguese League Results

mapleluso

After a penalty shootout win for Sporting over Porto in Saturday's League Cup final, the attention turns back to the league's championship.

And already on Monday we had some big games.

Maritimo 0 Rio Ave 2

Moreirense 2 Nacional 1

Tondela 0 Aves 2

Feirense 1 Guimaraes 2

Maritimo loses at home to Rio Ave, this snaps Maritimo's 3-game win streak. Rio Ave snaps a 10 game winless streak. When this winless streak first started, Rio Ave was tied with Sporting. They find themselves 14 back now with 1 less game played.

Moreirense gets a big win to temporarily move back up to 5th in the standings, as Belenenses SAD has yet to play. Nacional is slowly playing themselves into being part of the relegation fight.

Tondela has begun to struggle since their victory over Sporting. Pepa has been under immense scrutiny internally and Tondela looks like they will once again be involved in the relegation battle. Would not be surprised to see Pepa leave Tondela in the upcoming weeks. Aves, meanwhile, have climbed from last spot to above the cut-off line. Aves has now moved up to 15th overall with Augusto Inacio, who now has 2 straight wins. Boavista is now below the cut-off line and plays Benfica tomorrow at the Luz. Boavista fired coach Jorge Simao on Saturday and hired former Setubal coach Lito Vidigal in his place.

Feirense, meanwhile, must really be looking at letting go of coach Nuno Manta Santos. The team has been struggling and there is a gap widening up at the bottom. Feirense must get going soon if they are to save this season from relegation. Guimaraes got an important win after the double loss against Benfica at home. Luis Castro's team has proven to be very strong and perhaps the most tactically responsible of the league. This team is still in prime position to pounce and obtain 5th overall, as it is unexpected for Moreirense and Belenenses SAD to continue their impressive form until season's end.

Tomorrow's games:

2pm EST: Portimonense vs Chaves

2pm EST: Benfica vs Boavista

4:15pm EST: Braga vs Santa Clara
